Rumour: Yahoo to reshape Tumblr as YouTube rival

Rumours surrounding the future of Tumblr have been floating around this morning, after a report published by Business Insider claimed that Yahoo intends to challenge YouTube for online-video dominance.

The plans would involve transforming popular blogging and social networking website Tumblr, which Yahoo purchased for around $1 Billion just over a year ago.

Yahoo could potentially prize away some of YouTube’s top creators.

If the move were to take place, Yahoo could potentially prize away some of YouTube’s top creators, converting them to Tumblr where their videos would be available exclusively.

Tumblr has proven to be a popular online home for many young YouTube fans, who often use the site to blog about their favourite YouTubers, and share YouTube-related gifs and fan art.

The website has also been at the centre of YouTube’s recent sexual harassment controversy involving a number of British vloggers. Many viewers have turned to Tumblr to express their views on recent events, with some providing eye-opening accounts of their own experiences with those allegedly involved in the scandal.

It could be argued that Tumblr is already ideal for housing a similar user experience to YouTube. User’s get a ‘feed’ of what they want to see, and are able to follow other Tumblr blogs, an alternative function to YouTube’s subscription system.

High-budget advertising for top stars such as Zoella and The Slow-Mo Guys, including TV and billboard ads, have made an appearance.

Established YouTube entertainers may be wary of moving to a completely new online landscape, after spending their entire online presence as part of the YouTube community.

YouTube has also strengthened its relationship with creators over the last few months. Just weeks ago a YouTube spokesman announced that the group will be helping to fund higher-quality video content for some of its top stars.
