Sideplayer for YouTube: This free Chrome extension is great

SideThumb

If you’re YouTube obsessed then you’ll be interested to learn more about Sideplayer, a free-to-download Google Chrome extension that lets you watch a video even after leaving the website. Let us explain.

Once Sideplayer is installed, you’ll notice a new icon the next time you watch a YouTube video. Clicking this fresh link will create a mini video playback console in the corner of your browser. From here, you can go ‘back’ or switch tabs on Chrome and the video will continue playing. Pretty neat, eh?

Look, a new button! Also, hi Rick.

There’s more to Sideplayer than that, though. One of our favourite aspects of the tool (setting aside the fact that it’s free) is that the extension has no ads. On top of that, the video player is resizable and lets users adjust the speed of videos, if you’re into that stuff.

Before installing the plugin for testing ,we took a look at some user reviews to make sure we weren’t downloading a big ol’ waste of time. Right now, Sideplayer can boast a 4.5 star rating on Google Chrome, which isn’t bad at all.

Sideplayer user and reviewer, Private Angel, writes: “[Sideplayer] hasn’t failed me yet and follows me to whichever page or tab I go to. It’s great for a playlist while browsing. [The] best feature is that it’s big enough to watch and small enough not to disturb you”.

Another review, this time from Kia Bright, says: “This is exactly what I’ve wanted for a long time! No issues so far. Great extension!”

Sideplayer in action

We’ll admit that despite these rave reviews there’s been a couple of instances where the video player hasn’t loaded for us after a tab switch. Still, for the most part it’s an enjoyable experience.

When we find a fun, simple-to-use YouTube extension, we like to have a chat about it. Take a look at Magic Actions, for example, which we dubbed ‘the perfect YouTube companion’ earlier in the year.
