The Old Days: Zoella on YouTube

The Old Days is an online feature series looking back at YouTubers before their rise to fame and fortune began. We’ll be using the web archives to share screenshots of YouTube channels back when they were just starting to gather momentum.

With a loyal army of over 7 million subscribers at her side and a back catalogue of book projects and TV partnerships, things are looking good for Zoella.

The British vlogger continues to represent the wonders of YouTube on a global scale, more recently appearing on British cooking show, Great British Bake Off.

5 years ago, Zoe had less than 4,000 YouTube subscribers. She now boasts over 10 million (combined) through her main account and her second vlogging channel.

Although Zoella, one half of ‘Zalfie’, now has claim to one of the most popular vlogging channels in the UK, we’re taking a moment to look back at the early days of her YouTube channel, at a time when the entertainer had less than 4,000 subscribers.

Using Wayback Machine, we took a trip back to March 10th, 2010, when Zoella had just 7 uploads featured on her channel page.

The featured video on Zoella’s channel page, Vlog: Rip to release the cookie aroma, had just 3,313 views at the time of the Wayback Machine snapshot.

Comments from the YouTuber’s earliest-subscribed fans consist mainly of video suggestions and friend requests, with FASHIONISTADARLING writing: “Hey, I think you should just mix your beauty videos in with your vlog ones. You should do an About Me video so people get to know you better!”

Even in 2010, Zoella was still working on her personal fashion blog, which has clearly come on leaps and bounds since all those years ago, now featuring more professional-looking content and product reviews.

Zoella’s oldest publicly viewable video (above) features the vlogger presenting a bedroom tour.

Today, Zoella’s oldest public video dates back to 17th December 2009 (Yes, even earlier than our Wayback screenshot!) and is titled 60 Things in my Bedroom.

In the video description, Zoella writes: “I will be doing a room tour, but I had seen a few of these videos & I always love watching them, so I figured I would do one too”.
